When I was growing up, we didn’t talk about money. ¹
If we ever did, it was always on the same theme of not having enough.
Money always seemed like a bit of a mystery, a concept that was too challenging to grasp.
A resource that just seemed a little bit too complicated and almost something to avoid as it was more trouble that it was worth.
You may be able to relate to some of the phrases that I heard at home, including ‘filthy rich’, and ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’.
And how about ‘you weren’t born with a silver spoon in your mouth’. Ring any bells for you too?
Have you ever witnessed, as I have, the interesting response from the drivers of cars either side of a performance car waiting at the lights? It’s not usually complimentary.
I can remember thinking that it was best to avoid this whole money thing, I mean – why go there?
In contrast to this perspective, you’ve probably also witnessed those who make money the #1 priority in life to the point that they become obsessed with it.
A penny finally dropped for me on my journey with my financial health when I realised that I was attempting to avoid focusing on money, and yet I was needing to run around after all the bills that kept piling up, and I always had a sense that I couldn’t keep up.
I decided that I needed to get my financial health sorted (just as I have and continue to focus on optimising my physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and relational areas of my health) so that money could be looking after me, rather than the other way around.
This means I can then prioritise what’s important in my life, including spending time with my loved ones, contributing in my community, gardening, singing, playing classical guitar, dancing, learning languages and traveling.
I decided to upskill and do the work to turn this area of my life around.
What’s your take on this?
See you on this week’s #AlivewithFi – have a goodie 🙂
