I was chatting with a client about this one today. In terms of a mind-expanding approach that helps us to look from different perspectives, it’s worth checking out Denis Waitley’s work 1
And when it comes to whether the practice of healthy living is art or science – what’s your take? Basically, is it more about what double blind clinical trials can tell us, or more about an internal journey of self-observation and experimentation?
Years of on-the-job learning for me with my own journey, and with thousands of clients I’ve experienced the privilege of working with, I believe it’s a mix of both.
Whilst science absolutely has its place, it misses out a concept which I was late to come by, and one I’ve coined as our personal cellular-blueprint.
Basically – whilst an approach (eg types of foods) might work really well for me, it may not be the best fit for you.
At this point, the standard cellular science aspect becomes less relevant and is replaced with being our own health detective, followed by practicing the habits we’ve just discovered from our detective work on ourselves, that can serve us best – eg what to eat, when to exercise, how much water to drink etc.
Another interesting concept which is deliberately bypassed by medicine (in the realm of science) is the placebo effect. It denies the fact that whether we believe an approach can be helpful or not, which can actually be the deal breaker when it comes to positive outcomes. It certainly fascinates me that a sugar pill can be taken by people and they get better when they absolutely believe it’s helping them.
Having directed several integrative health centres where we co-created health programs for our clients with local doctors, I’ve been impressed with what’s possible when art and science (in this context of health) decide to work together to help people optimise their health.
What about you? I’m curious to hear your thoughts.
We’ll go deeper on this week’s #AlivewithFi and until then, have a goodie 🙂
