The new year is a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. It’s a time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the future. One way to do this is to choose a theme for the year.
A theme is a word or phrase that represents what you may want to focus on in the coming year. It can be something as simple as ‘love’, ‘growth’, or ‘gratitude’. It can also be more specific, such as ‘health and fitness’, ‘career success’,” or financial freedom’.
Once you’ve chosen your theme, you may want to set goals that align with them. For example, if your theme is ‘health and fitness’, you might set goals to exercise regularly, eat a health-focused diet, and secure enough sleep. If your theme is ‘career success’, you might set goals to network with like-minded people, take on new challenges at work, or earn a promotion.
Having a theme for the year can help us stay focused and internally motivated. It can also help us to make better decisions and prioritise our time.
What’s your theme for 2025?
If you haven’t already chosen a theme for the new year, invest some time to think about what you want to focus on…
…What are your goals and dreams?…
…What do you want to achieve in the next year, in relation to who you’re being and what you’re doing?
Once you have a good idea of what your theme is, it can help to set some goals that align with it. It’s worth being specific and realistic about your goals.

*Bonus tips* for choosing your theme:
- Brainstorm a list of words and phrases that represent what you want to focus on
- Choose a word or phrase that is meaningful to you
- Make sure your theme is specific and measurable
- Set goals that align with your theme
- Review your theme and goals regularly to stay on track (I find each month is a useful span of time)
It’s worth being flexible with your theme. Life is unpredictable, and things don’t always go according to plan. It’s ok to adjust your theme as needed.
